New Recording: UNEXPECTED JOURNEY (2011)

A Musical Reflection

I love to travel and my journeys have always been a source of delight and inspiration. As I travel, I meet wonderful people, discover beautiful places, and learn about new ways of knowing and being.

This album is not about such journeys, rather, it is a reflection on those unexpected journeys we must take in our lives. These are the journeys we do not plan. These are the paths we have not charted, yet we find ourselves walking the rocky pathways with great reluctance. We know not where the winding path leads or when the journey will end.
+

The water is wide, I cannot cross o'er
And neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that will carry two
And both shall row, my love and I.

One thing is sure. We must find a way to cross the chasm and reach what awaits us on the other side. We wish we could fly, soaring over the difficult passage, reaching our destination with ease. But his is not to be.

And as we travel onward, facing our disappointments and fears, we discover that if we are open to seeing, there is much beauty along the journey. This beauty, and dare I say joy, appears in the most unexpected of places - under a rock, beside a tree, along the banks of the river. Gradually we begin to realize that we would have never discovered such unique gifts of beauty on any path we would have chosen.

So as our inner transformation begins. Slowly a calm knowing fills our being. The challenging pathways of our unexpected journey are ultimately about transcendence. We have developed what we longed for since the beginning - we have gained our wings to fly. yet our understanding of how to use our wings is much different. We have learned that our spirits may soar while we remain rooted to the earth, walking all pathways, chosen or unexpected, with open, loving, and joy-filled hearts.

My life goes on in endless song.
Above earth's lamentations
I hear the real, though far off hymn
That halls a new creation.
Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear its music ringing
It sounds an echo in my soul
How can I keep from singing.

“‘Tis a gift to be simple ‘tis a gift to be free”. These words have inspired us throughout the creation of this album.  We have often noticed that the simplest of songs bring great delight to the human ear and spirit.  Perhaps it is because these melodies hold no pretenses, but simply speak of life– of laughter, tears, faith, hope, and love.  It has been a great joy to put together a compilation of some of our most loved music– music which captures an essence of simplicity.  In reflection, we realize that all music is a gift from above, as well as a gift of the heart, voice and hands.  We hope that our simple gift of music will be a blessing in your life.
